My Boiler Is Leaking Water - What Should I Do?

Finding water around your boiler is not something to ignore. It does not always mean the worst, but it does mean something needs attention, and the sooner the better.

Here is what to do if your boiler is leaking water, what is likely causing it and when to call an engineer.

What to Do Straight Away

Turn off the water supply to the boiler

If you can locate the isolation valve on the cold water feed to the boiler, turn it off. This stops more water entering the system.

Turn off the boiler

Switch the boiler off at the controls. Do not attempt to fix anything yourself.

Clean up the water

Water near electrical components is a hazard. Mop up any standing water carefully.

Call a Gas Safe registered engineer

Do not leave a leaking boiler running or unattended. Get a local Gas Safe registered engineer out to assess it as quickly as possible. Our boiler repairs team cover Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

What Causes a Boiler to Leak?

There are a few common causes and some are more straightforward to fix than others.

Pressure too high

If your boiler pressure is above the normal range, the pressure relief valve may release water to compensate. This is one of the most common causes of boiler leaks.

Worn seals or joints

Over time, the seals and connections inside a boiler can wear down and allow water to escape. This is common in older boilers.

Corrosion

Older systems can develop corrosion on internal components which leads to small leaks. If this is the cause, it is worth getting an honest assessment of the overall condition of the boiler, and whether a repair or a new boiler makes more sense.

A loose connection

Sometimes a leak is simply a loose fitting or connection that has worked itself free over time. A straightforward fix for an engineer.

If you are unsure, our guide on whether to repair or replace your boiler covers this in more detail.
