Heating bills are one of the biggest household expenses for homeowners across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
With over 20 years of experience working on heating systems across the region, we have put together some of the most effective ways to help reduce yours.
1. Get Your Boiler Serviced Annually
Over time, boilers build up dirt and debris internally which causes them to work harder to produce the same level of heat. A neglected boiler is an inefficient one.
Booking an annual service with a Gas Safe registered engineer keeps everything clean, checks all components are working correctly and makes sure your boiler is running as efficiently as possible. It also catches small issues before they become expensive ones.
2. Install a Smart Thermostat
A standard thermostat heats your home on a fixed schedule whether you are in or not. A smart thermostat only heats when you actually need it, so you are not paying to heat an empty house.
Once installed by a qualified engineer, you can control your heating from your phone, set schedules around your routine and turn it off remotely if you forget. Less wasted heat means a lower bill.
3. Consider a New Boiler if Yours is Over 10 to 15 Years Old
Older boilers lose a significant amount of the energy they use before it ever reaches your radiators. Modern A-rated boilers convert almost all of that energy into usable heat. If your boiler is old, it is very likely costing you more to run than a new one would.
A free home survey with a Gas Safe registered engineer will give you an honest picture of whether a replacement makes sense for your home. Finance options are also available if needed.
4. Turn Radiators Off in Rooms You Never Use
If your boiler is heating rooms that nobody uses, that is wasted energy every single time the heating comes on.
Turn the thermostatic valve on those radiators down to the lowest setting or off completely if the room is genuinely unused. Just make sure the room still gets occasional heat in winter to prevent damp.
5. Check Your Boiler Pressure
If your boiler pressure drops below 1 bar, the system is not circulating water properly. The boiler works harder than it should and your radiators may not heat up fully.
Check the pressure gauge on the front of your boiler. If it is below 1 bar, topping it up is a straightforward process that most homeowners can follow using the instructions in the boiler manual. If you are unsure or the pressure keeps dropping, contact a Gas Safe registered engineer as there may be a small leak in the system.
